Preliminary Analysis Questions

Part 1: Case Studies

The first part of this assignment involves reading and responding to questions related to two separate cases from the ID CaseBook (Ertmer and Quinn, 2007). The cases are linked in the course site. If you have not yet downloaded them please do so now. Case studies are, as you may have guessed, a constructivist instructional strategy. They provide students with an opportunity to apply knowledge to real world situations, and like the real world, they can be a little messy. As you respond to the items in this section, please remember that case studies do not always have one “right” answer or approach.

There are numerous ways to look at each situation and numerous paths one might take to solve the identified problem. Your goal should be to provide logical, well presented and well supported responses based on your knowledge of instructional design and the related theories.

Case Study 15: Beth Owens

1.       Download and read Case Study 15 from the ID CaseBook using the link provided in the course site.

2.       Reflect on our discussions related to learning theory.

3.       Review the Preliminary Analysis Questions and Implications for ID Practice Questions on pages 130-131 of the provided document.

4.       Select any ONE Preliminary Analysis Questions and any ONE Implications for ID Practice Questions to respond to.

5.       Reread the case, focusing on your chosen questions

6.       Develop BRIEF responses to EACH of your selected questions. Support your responses with concepts addressed throughout the semester.  Explain rather than just stating your position.

Case Study 2: Denny Clifford

1.       Download and read Case Study 2 from the ID CaseBook using the link provided in the course site.

2.       Reflect on our discussions related to instructional theories and strategies.

3.       Review the Preliminary Analysis Questions and Implications for ID Practice Questions on page 30-31 of the provided document.

Part 2: Review of Concepts and Theories

The second part of this assignment requires you to reflect on specific concepts and theories discussed throughout the semester, providing BRIEF responses to a series of questions. Do not approach this section as a research paper. Approach it as you would a series of short essay questions on an exam. Provide concise answers, 1-3 paragraphs in length each, based on your understanding of the material, presented in your own words. Again, I do not want to know what the literature says; I want to know what you have learned from what it says.

Please create a separate heading on your answer sheet for each item below. This will make grading much easier. Thanks!

1.       Instructional Systems

Throughout the semester we have discussed the importance of aligning the theoretical approaches employed in the instructional design process with three key components of the instructional system; the learners, the intended learning outcomes and the context. Explain the concept of alignment as it relates to instructional design and provide an example illustrating alignment between the components of the instructional system and the three theory groups discussed in class. Your response should demonstrate your understanding of how the theories work together to facilitate learning.

2.       Learning Theories

Select any two learning theories. Define, compare and contrast your chosen theories, providing examples of how each might be applied to a single topic. (Similar to the multiplication lesson example I provided earlier in the semester)

3.       Communication Theories

Define communication, identifying the key components of the communication system and the relationship between theories of communication and instructional design.

Include in your response at least one example of how communication theories have impacted the practice of instructional design.

4.       Instructional Theories

Explain the difference between prescriptive and descriptive theories of instructional design and categorize each of the theory groups we have discussed (learning, communication and instructional) using these titles. Include support for your categorizations. Provide an example illustrating how the different theories work together to inform the practice of instructional design.

5.       Reflection

Reflect on the course as a whole. Identify two or three key things (concepts, theories, instructional strategies, etc.) you learned as a result of this course. Briefly describe these key points, why they were of particular importance to you and how you expect they may influence your future efforts as a student and/or practitioner of instructional design.
